Louisiana bride on honeymoon arrested in case of mistaken identity

Few things in life are more romantic than a honeymoon. And few things are less romantic than being arrested on your honeymoon. But that’s what happened to a Louisiana woman who was on a cruise ship returning from her honeymoon in Cozumel, Mexico, when she was placed in handcuffs and arrested.

According to news reports, the arrest was the result of mistaken identity. The bride -- Sara Saucier – had been identified by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office as the same Sara Saucier who had failed to return a leased vehicle in 2017. Problem: law enforcement officials who boarded the cruise ship and made the arrest had the wrong Sara Saucier.

The Sara who was arrested said she “thought they would realize the mistake, and they would let me go.” But she was held for 36 hours until the mistake was noticed and she was released from the Orleans Parish Jail.

The veteran detective who filed the arrest warrant had entered an incorrect birth date for the suspect.

The Sara Saucier who was arrested said, “At one point when no one was listening to what I was saying, about me being innocent, I was like, oh my gosh, I’m really going to be in here for a while.”

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff said he was “sorry that such an error was made that caused an innocent woman to be put in such an upsetting situation” and that he will update and improve “policies, procedures and training” to ensure this kind of mistake doesn’t happen again.

Saucier said she is glad that officials apologized, but she has hired an attorney to explore her legal options.

This case highlights again why no one should assume that an arrest indicates guilt.
