Wrong-way driver causes fatal Calcasieu Parish crash on I-10

If you drive about 20 miles west of Lake Charles on Interstate 10, you will arrive in Vinton. The small town was the site of a recent violent four-vehicle crash on the interstate. One person died in the wrong-way collision, Louisiana State Police officials said.

According to a news report, the wreck about four miles west of Vinton was caused by a 76-year-old driver from Texas who was going the wrong way on I-10.

Officials said the wrong-way driver from Gonzales, Texas, initially slammed into a vehicle driven by a 52-year-old also from Gonzales. The modest-sized Texas town is about 250 miles west of Calcasieu Parish.

After the first collision, the vehicle driven by the 76-year-old hit head-on a vehicle driven by an 83-year-old Vinton resident. The Vinton resident’s vehicle then struck yet another vehicle.

Though the Vinton resident was wearing his seat belt, the injuries he suffered in the wreck were fatal. He was pronounced dead by officials at scene of the crashes.

The driver who caused the chain-reaction series of collisions was also properly restrained and suffered only minor injuries. He was treated at a Lake Charles hospital and released.

The other drivers were not injured, a news report stated.

We do not yet know why the driver was headed in the wrong direction on the interstate, but toxicology samples have been taken.

In some cases, wrong-way drivers are confused by signs near an interstate’s on-ramps and in other situations, distractions can play a crucial role in these high-speed errors.

Those who have been injured or who have lost loved ones in a crash caused by negligence should contact a Lake Charles attorney experienced in personal injury and wrongful death litigation.
