By the numbers: Infidelity, men, women, divorce

Many of our Lake Charles readers know that Louisiana has just three recognized grounds for divorce: conviction of a felony, living separate and apart for a specific amount of time, and adultery. (It should be noted that no-fault divorce in Louisiana is in the category of living separate and apart.)

In this blog post, we are going to take a look at research into infidelity and see how being unfaithful affects marriage and divorce.

The two widely acknowledged types of infidelity are physical and emotional. While many people assume that infidelity always involves sex, that is not necessarily accurate.

Emotional infidelity involves emotional distance between the spouses – a gap that can be filled by a spouse with a new emotional attachment to another person. That emotional relationship in many cases does not involve physical intimacy, but can nevertheless result in real damage to a marriage.

According to a study cited in a recent article, 60 percent consider emotional affairs to be cheating.

Let’s take a look at some other stats involving infidelity, marriage and divorce:

  • 21 percent of men are unfaithful in marriage or other serious relationships
  • 13 percent of women are unfaithful in marriage or other serious relationships
  • 20 to 40 percent of divorces are because of infidelity
  • 40 percent of those who have cheated are now divorced or separated
  • 17 percent of those who have remained faithful in marriage are divorced or separated
  • 61 percent of men who have been unfaithful are still married
  • 44 percent of women who have been unfaithful are still married

Studies also indicate that infidelity among women has risen in the past two decades, with many researchers concluding that the rise coincides with increasing financial independence among women. The data also shows that in general men tend to stray for sexual reasons and women tend to do so for emotional reasons.
