Louisiana State gets grant to study commercial vehicle crashes

While not every resident of Louisiana is a fan of Louisiana State University football (some of us prefer the McNeese State University Cowboys, for example), most are proud of the renowned school’s excellent reputation in scientific research (especially for NASA), teacher training, the humanities, natural history and much more.

We read recently in a news report that LSU has been awarded a federal grant to study commercial motor vehicle crashes. The $773,500 grant will enable the school to use streaming traffic camera videos to analyze wrecks involving 18-wheelers, as well as vans. cars, pick-ups and SUVs used for commercial purposes.

According to an Associated Press report, the study’s lead researcher is to be Professor Helmut Schneider at Louisiana State University's Center for Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety. Schneider and Supratik Mukhopadhyay in the school’s Division of Computer Science will use advanced analytics and artificial intelligence to analyze video streamed from multiple angles and multiple cameras.

The study will analyze a wide variety of factors in commercial vehicle crashes, including congestion levels, speed, traffic violations, mechanical breakdowns and more. Researchers hope that the grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will enable them to help Louisiana State Police reduce the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities.

Obviously, Lake Charles residents would be grateful if the study could help reduce commercial vehicle wrecks in heavily traveled areas such as downtown and on the streets leading to and from interstates 10 and 210.

Those who have been injured in crashes involving tractor-trailers and other commercial vehicles can fight for full and fair compensation for all damages with the help of a Lake Charles attorney experienced in personal injury litigation.
