Louisiana man’s DWI arrest makes national news

It takes a little more than four hours to drive east on interstate 10 and other highways to get to Cut Off, Louisiana. The 200-mile distance can be covered easily enough in a car, but what if you were driving a lawn mower? The town of less than 6,000 in Lafourche Parish recently garnered some national attention when one of its residents was arrested for drunk driving – on a lawn mower.

Law enforcement officers apparently saw the 59-year-old driving the mower on the shoulder of a highway just past midnight on Saturday morning.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s deputies apparently watched as the man veered into a lane of traffic and then drove the mower back on to the shoulder. According to news reports, the officers then pulled the man over. No details were given about how that traffic stop was executed.

The man reportedly told officers that he had consumed several beers before taking the wheel of the mower. He was administered a field sobriety test, which he apparently failed.

He was then given a breathalyzer test, which indicated that his BAC (blood alcohol content) was at .144 percent or nearly twice the legal limit. (In Louisiana, you can be arrested for DWI if your BAC is at .08 percent or higher.)

The arrest is no laughing matter. A first DWI offense can result in a jail term of up to six months, plus a driver’s license suspension of up to a year and a fine of up to $1,000. A first offense can also result in up two years of probation and at least 32 hours of mandatory community service.

If you face those harsh penalties, contact an attorney experienced in DWI/DUI defense about your legal options.
