Louisiana pastor resigns position after arrest on drug charge

If you drive north of Lake Charles on Martin Luther King Highway for about four and a half hours, you will arrive in Haughton, Louisiana. The small Bossier Parish town is known for its schools, parks and library. It's also famous for the 199-foot cross towering above its Church of the Cross.

The gleaming white landmark sits along U.S. 80 as a sign of welcome to passersby and the Assemblies of God congregation. Churchgoers were recently startled to learn that a senior pastor has been arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance, however. He has apparently admitted to using and possessing methamphetamine.

The 56-year-old preacher has resigned from his position in the church, a recent news article stated. He had been at the house of worship since 1996. He was reportedly instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the church's namesake cross.

The Shreveport Times reported that the clergyman admitted to law enforcement officials to using meth in his home.

He was being interviewed by sheriff’s deputies about an unrelated matter when he gave them permission to search his home. They reported finding 3.4 grams of methamphetamine, plus a pipe and a straw with meth residue on it.

It is not clear what officers were investigating when they visited the pastor's home, but he was reportedly not a target of that investigation.

We all know that everyone makes mistakes. Most of our shortcomings don't result in headlines or arrests. But when substance abuse and the law collide, mistakes can be magnified and lives changed.

If you have been arrested on a drug charge, speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney who will protect your rights and freedom. A skilled defense lawyer understands the law, and will investigate police procedures in your case and carefully examine the evidence.
